There are many reasons to purchase a lifetime subscription to the Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read app. Here are just a few:

  1. It allows your child to go at his or her own pace and not worry about completing the lessons before the subscription expires.
  2. You have the app forever and you can install on as many as 3 different devices using the same account.
  3. It’s perfect for families with multiple children who are at different reading stages. Rather than rush your younger child to finish the lessons before the subscription expires, the app will be there waiting for your child for whenever he or she is ready.

The Hooked on Spelling program will teach your child basic spelling skills. Although spelling lessons are not included in the Learn to Read program, leading research shows that phonics instruction has been shown to improve spelling skills.

No, your child doesn’t need to know the alphabet. The Learn to Read program will teach your child the alphabet. Flashcards are provided, with Visual Phonics videos available on DVD and online. Your child will practice the alphabet in the first workbook, and with the online games; which have alphabet activities for your child to practice upper and lowercase letters.

If your child is between the ages of 3 and 8 and reading below a 3rd grade reading level, he should be ready to use this program, either to get ahead in his learning or to improve his reading skills.

Begin at the beginning. Start your child on Step 1. That’s the only way to be sure your child knows all of the sounds (phonemes) and words he will need to know in order to read. Plus, it gives him a boost of self-confidence by starting on a level that may be a little bit easy for him.

  • Practice makes perfect! Hooked on Phonics is a comprehensive learn-to-read program. It was designed to make kids WANT to play the games, listen to (and sing!) the songs, and read the eBooks multiple times. The more they play it, the more they will learn.
  • Make it work for you. If you’re anything like the rest of us, you’re always on the go. We sometimes get caught up in thinking that if we can’t do something important (like doing a reading app with our children) every day, we shouldn’t do it at all. But Hooked on Phonics was designed with busy families in mind. You’ll be amazed what as little as 20 minutes a day can do!
  • Celebrate success! Your child thrives on praise from you. Encourage your child to read the eBooks aloud to parents, grandparents, friends, family members . . . even your dog! Learning to read is a huge accomplishment. The more your child practices reading aloud, the more fluent he will become. Showing interest in your child’s achievements tells him that reading is important to you and you are proud of her accomplishments.
  • Encourage creativity. The Trophy Room in the app was designed as places for kids to let their creative juices flow! In the Trophy Room, kids customize their own reward.

The updated Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read program aligns with the most current Common Core Standards for Reading Foundational Skills for Kindergarten through Second Grade, including:

  1. Concepts of Print
  2. Phonological Awareness
  3. Letter-Sound Correspondence
  4. High-Frequency Word Recognition

The new version has many more layers to it. There is now something for every kind of learning style:

  1. For Visual learners, there are DVDs with videos that illustrate the concepts as well as workbooks that allow children to follow along as they watch.
  2. For Auditory learners, there are silly, sing-along songs to help children remember the concepts being taught.
  3. For Physical (Kinesthetic) learners, there are flash cards and suggestions for off-the-page activities using real-world objects. In addition, there are online games that allow children to interact with the words and practice the skills.

It comes with a library of 36 storybooks- some written by award-winning authors- that are custom-created for the purpose of setting the child up for reading success.

It’s fun! The videos are cute. The songs are silly and catchy; they make the kids want to dance. The program is set up so that the child is rewarded at every step.

The new Learn to Read now has a mobile app (of the same name), which allows families to help their kids learn how to read on smartphones and tablets.

It’s always a great idea to talk with your child’s teacher about his progress with our programs. Over 5 million families and thousands of schools have used our programs for more than 25 years. The new Learn to Read is now aligned with educational standards for all 50 states.

The Hooked on Spelling program will teach your child basic spelling skills. Although spelling lessons are not included in the Learn to Read program, leading research shows that phonics instruction has been shown to improve spelling skills.

The Learn to Read program was not designed for someone learning English since you must know and understand English to understand the words in the lessons. However, if someone is using English in school and understands English, they can use it not to learn the language, but to learn to read better.

It was not designed to help children with learning disabilities, yet we hear from many families that it has been an effective tool for children with learning disabilities. We recommend you check out our product demo and see how the product works so you can decide for yourself.

Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read is an 8-level program that takes children from letter names and sounds all the way through long-vowel sounds, complex vowels, consonant blends, and challenging sound combination. By the end of the program, your child should be reading at a second grade reading level. The Learn to Read Completes and Levels are components of this complete program. You do not have to purchase the Completes or Levels if you have the complete program.

The Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read program uses systematic instruction and multi-sensory materials to help children learn to read. The instructional approach and techniques are based on current research about how children learn to read, and the levels build systematically from letters and sounds, then to words and sentences, and ultimately to reading fluency. This happens from time to time because the Learn to Read app is gigantic, more than 150MB with the full app loaded. We are always working to compress it, which you will see in future updates, but we will not do that at the expense of the excellent content, videos, and interactivity that make Hooked on Phonics such a successful program.

If it’s taking too long to download or if the download fails, please completely delete the app from your device and move as close as you possibly can to your Wi-Fi signal. Try to avoid using your Wi-Fi during the download process. It could also help to change your Auto-Lock Setting to 15 MINUTES. (If you have it set at 2 MINUTES,  your device could go to “sleep” during the download and cause a disruption.) Then try again. The download is fairly quick when the Wi-Fi signal is strong and the other factors are eliminated.

A purchase on one Apple device will always work on other Apple devices with the same user name and password. The same is true when moving from one Android device to another. Unfortunately, you cannot transfer a purchase between Apple and Android devices. If you switch from one platform to the other, you will need to re-purchase all in-app items.

To install your app and in-app purchases to a new Apple/iOS device:

  • Make sure you sign onto the new device with the same Apple user name you used when you bought your Steps and eBooks.
  • Download the free app again. If your paid Steps and eBooks don’t appear, touch the “For Parents” button in the upper right then touch “restore purchases”.

It’s perfect for children who know or need to learn their alphabet and are just beginning to put together the letters with the sounds they made.

These lessons correspond to the Kindergarten (purple) Level 1 version of the complete Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read system.

If your child is in Pre-K, has not quite mastered the alphabet and letter sounds, or they are struggling with Step 1 of the Learn to Read program, The Big Reading Show may be a good place to start. The Big Reading Show is an exciting preschool learning program that introduces pre-readers to the alphabet and letter sounds – critical skills they’ll need to begin Step 1 of the Learn to Read program. Part variety show, part interactive game, The Big Reading Show features 13 episodes, each one an exploration of letters, words, text concepts, phonemic awareness, and vocabulary. Good news, The Big Reading Show is part of the Hooked on Phonics app as well!

Please be certain that the volume is up and the mute function has not been turned on.

If you’ve been running several apps, there might be a conflict if more than one uses sound as much as our apps do. Please close all open apps (including Hooked on Phonics) and re-launch.

Assuming your sound settings are ok, this might have been a download problem. This happens from time to time because the app is gigantic (sorry… tons of content) and the sound files load last. So, if there is even a slight Wi-Fi interruption during the download, and the sound files don’t finish loading, the sound does not work. To fix it, you’ll have to completely delete the app from the device and re-download it.

If possible, please move as close to your Wi-Fi wireless access point as you can get to get the strongest possible signal before you re-start the download. This usually helps. Don’t worry… anything you purchased is still yours and will be available when you re-install as long as you use the same username.

Check to make sure you have enough room on your device for the Hooked on Phonics app. It requires at least 90 MB of free space.

  1. Make sure you are connected to the Internet through Wi-Fi. Our apps are big so they will not download if connected through a cellular network.
  2. Get as close as possible to your Wi-Fi.
  3. Try not to use your Wi-Fi connection while it’s downloading.
  4. Change your auto-lock setting on your device to 15 MINUTES. (If you have your auto-lock set at 2 minutes, your device might go to “sleep” before it’s finished downloading.)
  5. Make sure you have enough memory on your device. You need at least 90 MB of free space. Find out how to check your free space on an iOS device.

The Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read app is based on the proven teaching methods of the Hooked on Phonics books and DVD sets.

Our app is appropriate for children who are reading level Pre-K through First-grade and our physical Learn to Read products are geared toward children working at Pre-K through Second-grade reading levels.
