All of your Hooked on Phonics questions, answered.
This program is designed for children ages 3–8 who are just starting their reading journey or could use a boost in order to read at (or above!) grade level.
Our standards-aligned phonics program covers foundational reading skills for Pre-K through second grade. Your child should start in the section that best matches their current skill level.
The program starts with the Pre-reader section, which introduces the alphabet and letter sounds. It continues with the Learn to Read section, where your child will have a chance to read a new book after each lesson.
Your subscription includes monthly access to our multi-subject App (Phonics, Spelling, and Math) for up to three learners, plus a new Practice Pack containing a phonics workbook, two to three storybooks, and stickers shipped to your home each month. You can adjust the Practice Pack shipping frequency on your customer dashboard.
Yes! Your subscription includes app access for up to three separate learners. Each learner’s progress is tracked individually. You will receive one Practice Pack each month with your subscription. You can add extra Practice Packs to your subscription for $9.99 per month for each additional learner.
Although our program was not developed specifically as a teaching aid for children with learning challenges, it has helped many children with diverse learning needs improve their reading skills.
There is something about the repetition, pacing, and interactivity that seems to strike a chord with young learners. The app offers an engaging interactive digital experience, while the Practice Pack provides a hands-on learning modality that other reading apps do not provide. We encourage families to try the program for 30 days to see if it’s a good fit. We also suggest you check out this Facebook group, founded specifically for parents of children with learning challenges using Hooked on Phonics. It’s a very supportive space!
Hooked on Phonics can serve as a useful review tool for older children reading at (or below) the second grade level. Even if some of the early lessons are on the easier side for this age group, the review can give them a great confidence boost. Because each step builds on the ones before it, once learners reach lessons that challenge them, they are better equipped to take on new concepts. We encourage using Hooked on Spelling—which is included with your app subscription—as an added way to improve both reading and spelling skills.
If your child is reading beyond a second grade level, our program is likely not the right fit.
The Hooked on Phonics program is a supplementary curriculum resource for children from preschool to second grade. The Hooked on Phonics Scope and Sequence begins with Pre-reader, which covers alphabet knowledge. It progresses to Learn to Read, which is a systematic, sequential phonics program where children will advance to reading complete words and simple stories independently.
Each step includes three lessons with multiple activities. The complete program includes digital and print resources. Together, these tools incorporate reading, writing, and listening through a blended approach of interactive digital learning opportunities like songs, games, puzzles, and decodable stories, as well as hands-on reading and writing practice.
The Hooked on Phonics program builds confident readers with its proven method of Learn, Practice, Read, and Celebrate. It is expertly designed to align with the science of reading, the body of knowledge that explains how children learn to read.
At Hooked on Phonics, we believe every child can become a confident reader with the right tools and support. Our program is meticulously designed to align with the Science of Reading, an evidence-based approach that combines decades of research from cognitive science, linguistics, and education. Here’s how Hooked on Phonics embodies the principles of the Science of Reading to foster effective, lasting literacy skills in children.
Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words. This skill is crucial for reading success. Hooked on Phonics emphasizes phonemic awareness through engaging activities and interactive lessons that help children understand the sound structures of words, laying a solid foundation for their reading journey.
Phonics instruction is essential for children to decode words efficiently. Our program provides systematic and explicit phonics instruction, teaching children the relationships between letters and sounds. With Hooked on Phonics, children practice blending sounds to form words and segmenting words into individual sounds, making reading more intuitive and less frustrating.

A rich vocabulary is a key component of reading comprehension. Hooked on Phonics introduces new words in context, helping children understand their meanings and how they are used in sentences. Our program includes a diverse range of texts that expose children to a wide variety of vocabulary, enhancing their language skills and making reading more enjoyable.
Fluency in reading means reading smoothly with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. Hooked on Phonics incorporates repeated reading practices, where children read texts multiple times to improve their fluency. This practice helps children read more naturally, making it easier for them to focus on understanding the text rather than decoding each word.
Comprehension is the ultimate goal of reading. Hooked on Phonics integrates strategies that promote active reading and critical thinking. The workbooks include comprehension questions, discussion prompts, and drawing and writing activities that encourage children to think about what they’ve read, make connections, and engage deeply with the text. This ensures that they are not just reading words, but also understanding and enjoying the stories.
