Why Should My Child Learn French?

A great deal of press and a number of formal studies have reported on the various developmental benefits of early foreign language study. Although all mechanisms are not perfectly understood, researchers have observed that learning a second language can enhance general academic performance, cognitive development, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills; in fact, learning a second language may even increase the amount of "gray matter" (neural material) in the brain.

French is one of the most widespread, internationally important languages. With 72 to 79 million native speakers (and another 190 million secondary speakers), French is the only language other than English spoken on five continents. It is the second most common language taught in the United States and is therefore likely to be encountered at some point during a student's academic years. Also, a large percentage of English words are borrowed or derived from French, so knowledge of French is believed to improve knowledge of English vocabulary.
